How to start your business
At the Portobello Business Centre we believe that failing to plan is planning to fail.

To help you to plan properly, we can direct you to one of our business advisers. Our team of professional business advisers (all with hands-on business experience) can guide you through the essential steps to launching your own business. This is a free service.

We also have a pool of business consultants with specialist knowledge, ranging from accounting to new technology, who can help you with specific problems.

An essential for any new business is a robust and realistic business plan. Your business adviser will give you all the expert help you need to build it. Your plan will include the following: -
  • an executive summary
  • details of your research - product and marketplace
  • a marketing strategy and plan
  • an operational (administration) plan
  • a financial package including cashflow and profit and loss
In compiling the plan you will need to be aware of business practices, legal obligations and tax regimes. Your business adviser can, of course, help with all of these aspects.

Your business adviser may suggest that you consider our Business Start Up Course.

Once you have completed your plan, (which you can work on at our Information Technology Centre) you will be ready to move forward. To help you further, we can direct you towards grants and soft loans that are available. Although we cannot guarantee success, we do have a strong record of helping people over more than 20 years!
